On the first day of fall camp, the Colorado Buffaloes will be without former wide receiver coach Jason Phillips. He’ll be stepping down to attend to a “personal matter,” BuffBlitz’s Brian Howell confirmed Sunday evening.
Prior to joining the Buffs in 2024, his coaching time was spent between Kansas in 2015 (CFB), Salt Lake Stallions in 2018 (Alliance of American Football) and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2022 (CFL), all as a receivers coach.
Phillips would have been entering his third year with the program before having to depart. Notably, he also coached two-way star Travis Hunter during his Heisman campaign in 2024.
In his place, head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders has promoted Rashad Davis to wide receivers coach from his formerly held inside receivers spot. Davis had previously played defensive back at Jackson State and was on Coach Prime’s staff at JSU before making the switch to CU.
Davis has also played a large role in recruitment, helping coach Darius Darden-Box and Rashad Rich bring in recruits and actively reach out to them. His charisma has allowed him to connect well with his players.
Having been around the receivers in some capacity since December of 2022, he has the full trust of Coach Prime and will be handed to the keys of a potentially lethal receiving core. It’ll now be up to Davis to maximize the talent of transfers Danny Scudero, Kam Perry, Deandre Moore and Earnest Campbell, as well as his returning guys from last season.
As the first week of fall camp is in Colorado Springs, the players will be staying in the UCCS dorms and hitting the Fountain-Fort Carson High School practice fields. This extended opportunity with players is a chance to have a fresh and focused start to the year.
Also joining the staff in a quarterback analyst role will be AJ Smith, who was most recently coached with the UFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks this spring.
